Optimizing XSAN for frame based video (DPX)

**** Work in Progress ****

Must be able to fiddle the Inode min size, stripe breath, fs block size and hardware setup so it is perfectly sized for storing DPX files with the minimum amount of Inode extents.  It seems to be the FSM that has a tough time when dealing with frame based video, not the storage (within reason).

Hardware Optimization:

Metadata LUN:

SATA disks are great for storing large files cheaply but not so great for low latency database duties.  Relatively small 15k+ rpm SAS / Fiber drives are far better suited to the task, as they have a lower seek time.  SSDs would be better still, however I have not seen a Xsan on SSD.

Having a dedicated RAID controller for the metadata LUN would reduce latency.  Some RAID controllers have multiple FC ports for the same 'channel', this allows the controller to be connected directly to the MDC, bypassing the switch whilst still allowing multiple MDCs for redundancy.
